Healthy Eating

How to Indulge in Dessert

When you're eating out, dessert is often a hard thing to pass up. Most of the time you need to say "no," but if it feels like a special occasion, make the most of it. Here's how:

  • Fruit with ice cream: If fresh fruit would do the trick, have that. If fruit with ice cream is what you want, that's fine, too. You can ask for them in separate dishes and make your own dessert, using 3 teaspoons of ice cream topped by the fresh fruit.
  • Cake to share: If only the most decadent chocolate cake will suffice, go ahead and order it - along with enough forks for everyone at the table. Have just three bites, eat them as slowly as possible, and then send the rest away with the first passing busboy. Three bites only. Try this experiment at home: Have three bites of any dessert, then stop and put the rest aside for a few minutes. You'll see that it was just as satisfying as eating the whole thing - and you'll still respect yourself in the morning.
