Our Resident Research Program
Program Overview
- We feel that in order to be a well-trained internist,
residents must understand clinical research and evidence-based medicine.
- We have a unique and successful program in clinical
research designed to train residents in evidenced-based medicine.
- We also strive to give residents research
opportunities that suit their career goals.
- We have undertaken a number of initiatives to provide our residents with
this type of experience:
- We have a dedicated group of Clinical Scholars, a Director of Clinical Research
and a Clinical Research staff that assist residents with research.
- We require a weeklong intensive course (during which residents are excused
from clinical duties) on fundamentals of clinical research.
- All residents work in collaboration with a faculty mentor who assists in
the development and implementation of research projects.
Program Highlights
- In the last 3 years, resident research projects have included prospective
clinical studies, retrospective reviews, quality initiatives, case reports
and case series.
- There have been greater than 25 presentations at regional meetings, including
3 top award winners.
- There have been approximately 15 presentations at national research meetings.
- There
have been 10 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Our Internal Medicine residents have won first place at the national American
College of Physicians resident research competition, and, for two consecutive
years, taken the first place award at the American College of Physicians Associates
Meeting, and have presented multiple oral and poster presentations at national
research meetings.
