Medication Information

Some medications need to be stopped before your operation. This varies among patients. Your doctor or the surgical case manager will tell you if you need to stop any medications before your operation. Please continue to take your medications unless instructed otherwise.

Dietary Supplements: Vitamins, Minerals, Herbal Supplements, Holistic Supplements
Studies have shown that there are anesthetic interactions with herbal supplements. Please stop taking any dietary supplements fourteen days before your operation. If it is less than fourteen days until your operation, please stop taking any dietary supplements from now until your operation.

Warfarin (Coumadin)
If you take Coumadin, please discuss this with your surgeon at least one week before your operation. You need to obtain special instructions about when to stop this medication.

Enoxaparin (Lovenox)
If you take Lovenox, please discuss this with your surgeon as soon as possible. You need to obtain special instructions about when to stop this medication

Clopidogrel (Plavix)
If you take Plavix, please discuss this with your surgeon as soon as possible. Follow your surgeon's instructions whether to continue taking your Plavix or whether to stop taking it before your operation.

Ticlopidine (Ticlid)
If you take Ticlid, please discuss this with your surgeon as soon as possible. Follow your surgeon's instructions whether to continue taking your Ticlid or whether to stop taking it before your operation.

Tylenol (acetaminophen)
You may take Tylenol, if needed, for pain up until the day of your operation.

Aspirin and Drugs With Aspirin
If your doctor wants you to stop aspirin before your operation, stop taking it and products containing aspirin ten days before the operation. Do not stop taking aspirin unless instructed to do so.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS)
If your doctor wants you to stop NSAIDS before surgery, stop taking them three days before surgery. You do not need to stop taking them unless instructed to do so.
