Blood Transfusions

Will I Have a Blood Transfusion?
Blood and any of its components may be given if needed for your well being. If you have any concerns about the use of blood transfusions, please talk with your surgeon before the day of your operation.

Autologous Blood Donation
An autologous transfusion is where you donate your own blood before the operation and receive it after the operation, if blood is needed. If you want to donate your own blood, talk with your doctor. He or she can discuss with you whether you are likely to need a blood transfusion and the options available to you. To donate your own blood your doctor must fill out a special collection order form. You can donate your blood through the American Red Cross. In Livingston County area please call 800-968-4283, extension 324 or 800-GIVE-LIFE. Donating your blood needs to be done at least seven business days before your operation.

Directed Donor Blood
Directed donor blood is blood from donors selected by you and reserved for your operation. Donors need to donate blood at least seven business days before your operation. Their blood must match your blood for you to be able to use it. If you would like to arrange for directed donor blood, please talk with your doctor.
