A Therapeutic Environment

Huron Woods is located on the campus of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in the Towsley Senior Health Building, a center for geriatric care. Residents have ready access to quality primary and specialty health care services provided by specialists in geriatric medicine. St. Joseph Mercy Hospital offers residents access to outstanding medical services including physical, speech and occupational therapies, podiatry, dental care, radiology services and vision and hearing screening. The Older Adult Unit of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital provides acute care to Huron Woods' residents should they require it.

A Therapeutic EnvironmentDr. Alan Dengiz, a leading specialist in memory loss, serves as Huron Woods' medical director and has offices adjacent to the community. Dr. Dengiz assures that the latest research in Alzheimer's Disease and memory loss will be applied to the daily care of residents. Residents are served by staff social workers, an activity director and a 24-hour, on-site nurse. Residents also have access to a geriatric nurse practitioner at Senior Health Services offices, directly adjacent to Huron Woods.

Offering Two Levels of Care

Huron Woods offers two levels of care - for those with early and advanced stages of memory loss. Each level has its own staffing pattern, resident programming, specialized staff training program and admission criteria. Research shows - and our own experience proves - that residents are best served in a setting tailored to address their needs and capabilities. Therefore, as their needs and abilities change, residents experience a smooth transition between levels of care.

Huron Woods' customized activity programming addresses specific cognitive needs. Residents may choose to participate in movement classes and discussion groups as their individual abilities allow. Playing games and watching movies are other favorite activities. Music therapy and pet therapy are regular activities to which all residents look forward. Residents with more advanced stages of memory loss engage in activities that reinforce their senses and bring pleasure.

Residents are served by staff social workers, an activity director and a 24-hour, on-site nurse.
