Anesthesiology
The
Department of Anesthesiology has a multitude of opportunities to explore scientific
clinical questions through our involvement in intra-operative anesthesia, acute
and chronic pain management and OB anesthesia.
- Dr. John Rivard partnered with the Department of
Surgery to explore two studies. He and Dr. Raphael Grossman looked at the
“Optimal Anesthesia Regimen for Patients Undergoing Thyroid or Parathyroid
Surgery to Improve Early Postop Discharge.”
- Dr. Rivard has also developed a study to define a
protocol for “Optimal Anesthesia Regimen to Facilitate Same Day Discharge of
Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.”
- Dr. Kevin Klimek, as Regional Anesthesia Director, in
conjunction with a former obstetric resident, presented a Society for
Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) poster on “The Effectivenes of
Intrathecal Analgesia for Cerclage." Dr. Klimek is now formulating a study to
look at “Combined Spinal Epidural Anesthesia with Single Shot Epidural Depodur
for Total Hip Replacement.” He is also exploring “Optimal Duramorph Dosing in
Combination with Continuous Femoral Nerve Block for Total Knee Arthroplasty.”
- A subgroup of anesthesiologists and I are
participating in a multicenter, randomized, double blind study to investigate
“The Effect of Aprotinin on Transfusion Requirements and Blood Loss in
Patients Undergoing Elective Primary Total Hip Replacement Surgery.”
- In the arena of chronic pain management, Dr. Ed Washabaugh studied and presented,
“Functional Improvement of Facet Arthropathy using Radiofrequency Denervation
and Measured with SF-36.”
