Resident-Centered Care in a Setting So Much
Like Home
Walk
through the front door of Huron Woods and you'll
sense that this is someplace special. The entrance
resembles the foyer of a large house and the residential
surroundings - from the wicker porch furniture
to the private rooms - feel very much like home.
And that is precisely how we want our residents
to feel...at home and secure.
We created Huron Woods to serve individuals with
Alzheimer's Disease and memory loss. Resident
integrity, dignity and respect are at the center
of everything we do here. Because memory loss
is extremely difficult for individuals who experience
it and for the families who love them, we provide
nurturing, home-like surroundings, and an environment
where residents experience a very high quality
of life for as long as possible. We work closely
with families to help them remain part of the
resident's life and to adjust to changes in their
loved one.
Because You Want the Very Best for Those You
Love
Huron Woods is located on the campus of St.
Joseph Mercy Hospital, offering residents immediate
access to some of the best medical services. The
facility is divided into five individual homes,
complete with kitchen, dining and living areas.
Two distinct levels of care are offered and residents
benefit from programming and activities designed
specifically to serve their capabilities. Most
importantly, residents are treated with extraordinary
kindness and concern by staff, many of whom have
dedicated their lives to serving the elderly.
Indeed, at Huron Woods, you will feel secure knowing
that your loved one is receiving excellent quality
care in the most supportive and nurturing environment
possible.
Quality of life for residents
and peace of mind for families is the promise
of Huron Woods.
Keeping it All in the Family
You want your loved one to feel secure in his
or her surroundings - rest assured that he or
she will at Huron Woods. The facility is divided
into five residential areas made up of 14 private
rooms. The size of each "home" is designed
in accordance with current research; residents
function optimally in smaller groups. Each home
has its own kitchen, dining room, den, living
room and access to a secure courtyard with a circular
pathway and raised beds for gardening. All interior
design choices - including residential furniture
and wall and floor coverings - were made to reinforce
that Huron Woods really is a resident's "home
away from home."
Residents share nutritious meals three times
a day as a family and are encouraged to perform
activities that bring them pleasure and satisfaction,
such as making beds, setting the table, feeding
the birds and gardening. Whatever the activity,
staff members take the extra time to encourage
residents to do it for themselves, rather than
doing it for them.
Where Families Matter
Extended families can be as involved as they
like at Huron Woods. You are invited to participate
in individualized care planning sessions and are
welcome to visit at any time. Family members often
assist with meals, take residents home for a day
or out for a walk. The activity director plans
family outings, picnics, parties and holiday gatherings.
Social workers plan support programs for family
members who are dealing with the difficult changes
that Alzheimer's Disease and related memory loss
bring.
Most importantly, Huron Woods residents receive
round-the-clock care, offering residents more
consistency than they might receive if cared for
by a family member. With professionals providing
physical care, family members can focus on providing
the special emotional support and love that only
they can give.
Huron Woods really is a resident's
"home away from home."
