Stroke Program

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System's stroke program brings together specially trained doctors, nurses and therapists to provide comprehensive stroke care. Every patient will receive evidence based, consistent and equitable care. Comprehensive rehabilitation services are available as soon as a patient is medically stabilized.

We are committed to supporting the communities we serve. Our stroke team delivers life-saving stroke services 24 hours a day. We also work closely with the community to decrease incidents of stroke through our stroke awareness and support services.

Stroke Statistics
• Every 45 seconds, someone in America has a stroke.
• Stroke is the nation's No. 3 cause of death and the leading cause of serious, long-term disability.
• About 700,000 Americans will have a stroke this year and 168,000 of them will not survive.

SJMHS Stroke Program community education (2007-2008) is made possible by a generous gift from the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Medical Auxiliary.

Stroke Program Vision

Our stroke team has established and will sustain a culture of excellence in stroke care, which enables us to provide a remarkable patient experience. As a regional leader in stroke care, our patient outcomes are continuously monitored and safety is a priority in stroke planning, implementation and evaluation.

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital are Primary Stroke Centers, certified by the Joint Commission.

The Joint Commission's Primary Stroke Center Certification program was developed in collaboration with the American Stroke Association. It is based on the Brain Attack Coalition's "Recommendations for the Establishment of Primary Stroke Centers." The Joint Commission's Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. Achievement of certification signifies that the services provided have the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving stroke outcomes.

Primary Stroke Center certification signifies that SJMH and SJMLH have effectively managed to meet the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients.
