Radiation Oncology
We have one of the largest radiation oncology departments in Michigan, led
by a team of experts, from physicians to physicists, who are dedicated to patient-focused
care. SJMHS continues to invest in the most advanced cancer treatment capabilities,
including:
Michigan's First CyberKnife(r) Radiosurgery Center
In 2007, SJMHS unveiled the first CyberKnife(r) in Michigan. CyberKnife(r)
represents the latest generation of radiosurgery systems, combining image guidance
technology with a compact linear accelerator. It has the flexibility to move
in three dimensions to focus on the targeted area for treatment, practically
anywhere in the body.
CyberKnife(r) surpasses Gamma Knife technology because there is no stereotactic
frame. It is the only extracranial radiosurgery device in widespread use that
can treat lesions and tumors (anywhere in the body), even tumors once considered
inoperable.
Worldwide, physicians have used CyberKnife(r) to treat more than 40,000
patients. It has demonstrated success with a wide spectrum of cancers, including:
- Brain
- Lung
- Prostate
- Pancreas
- Liver
- Head & Neck
One of the Country's Few Brachytherapy Centers
SJMHS has one of few dedicated brachytherapy surgical suites in North America,
offering high-dose-rate (HDR) and low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy treatments
for prostate, gynecologic, head and neck cancer and breast cancer (mammosite).
Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
A specialized form of radiotherapy that allows treatment to be more exactly
shaped to fit a patient's tumor, sparing normal healthy tissue and lowering
the chance of side effects.
CT Planning System
Merges multiple images with other advanced imaging technology (i.e. PET and
MRI) to achieve the most advanced and precise targeted radiation treatment plan.
Linear Accelerators (External Beam Radiation)
SJMHS has five linear accelerators with the most advanced technology capable
of delivering stereotactic radiosurgery, IMRT, IGRT and 3D / 4D Gating.
SJMHS has one of the nation's leading CCOP's designated by the
NCI. This partnership allows access to Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG)
protocols and other NCI sponsored cooperative groups to provide the latest treatments
for our patients.
