Quality of Care at SJMHS
Saint Joseph Mercy Health System routinely monitors the quality of care provided
throughout its hospitals. The system's hospitals voluntarily participate in the
Hospital Quality Alliance, a national voluntary initiative to collect and report
hospital quality performance information. The results for all participating hospitals
are available through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
and the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA) at www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov.
You can view our performance on these national quality performance measures
by selecting a medical condition from the list on the right.
Acute Myocardial Infarction
An acute myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack, occurs when
blood stops flowing to a part of the heart muscle. The measures listed reflect
treatments that can lessen the damage or risk of death.
Heart Failure
Heart failure, also called congestive heart failure, is a condition indicating
difficulty with the pumping function of the heart, sometimes resulting in fluid
build-up in the lungs or feet. The measures listed concern diagnostic tests and
treatments that may help patients with this condition.
Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs caused by an infection. The measures
listed reflect the timing of treatment and efforts to prevent future episodes.
Surgical Infection Prevention
The risk of wound infection can be reduced by giving patients a short course
of preventive antibiotics. Usually the antibiotics are discontinued shortly after
surgery in order to avoid a problem with resistance. The measures listed indicate
how often the antibiotics are given within this time frame.
