Use of intravenous (IV) drugs increases the risk of
HIV progression, although the reasons for this are not
clear. The use of IV drugs makes it more difficult to follow a treatment plan
and increases the risk of transmitting HIV to others.
Abuse of marijuana, cocaine (crack), or other drugs, or abuse of
alcohol, also increases the rate of HIV progression.
